I'm a bit perplexed - I lost out on a head coach that I really wanted because he was running defense the way I was wanting to have it run and he had very nice skills.

I assumed someone offered him a crazy contract to be their head coach but when I look this morning, it appears he took an offensive coordinator job for less money than what I offered. So I'm like OK, it wasn't money and he took a job for less prestige -- why did I lose out on him? Guess I assumed coaches would want to move to head coaching jobs. My team isn't bad - we won our division last season (have the fancy little banner and everything). So I wouldn't think it would be due to an awful job like the Raiders and everybody was avoiding me (?)

So yeah I was just curious if there is logic to how a coach determines to take a job?

The coach contracts are very simple, and their decision is equally simple, since there's no guaranteed money - basically they take the highest base salary (per year) that they are offered. Length of contract does nothing really other than help you not have to renegotiate with him any sooner (unless you want to give him a raise).

If you offered a lower per-year salary but more years, he'll take the shorter contract with more per-year. If you offered a higher per-year salary than he took then I'll need to look into it and see why he selected that contract.

I could not see where the coach signing transactions were logged. I looked this morning on my team page but did not see it there. Now that I searched into the league transactions I can see that this is the old "pebkac" problem.

Apparently I thought(?) I offered him the job but looking at the log, my team (Detroit) never got the paperwork into the agent or something. Darn fax machines must have been on the blink again...will have to perform percussive maintenance on them again.

But yeah I guess that makes a ton of sense now:

Haha - I actually think what I did was I offered him the head coach spot then started to offer him another job and I bailed out of the contract screen because I remembered the name. Alas, I did successfully hire a coach... (there was much rejoicing)
