Understanding Contracts

Just took over SF in MFN47. There are a bunch of horrendous contracts on this team, and i think because most of the contracts are heavily bonus focused, it means cutting these players doesnt really help me. So essentially I'm screwed cap wise, and have to just strip the team down to core players and rebuild.

However SF has two decent QB. One of them is basically costing me 600k (82/82) and one is costing me 11m (94/94). Since I am going to go through a heavy rebuild I am considering moving the 11m qb for assets and to get the cap space. However, when i looked at the contract structure it was 3m/8m. So that basically means if I trade him, i would be eating 8m until his contract expires and only be saving 3m correct?

Here is his link: https://mfn47.myfootballnow.com/player/2617

Additionally, if anyone has advice on how to fix this team that i took over please let me know. Im taking the L and cutting about 8 players who contracts are just horrendous and taking the dead cap in hopes of clearing the future cap

The season is almost over, in most cases you're going to be better off waiting until next year to cut players - you're not going to gain much cap space this year (because the base contract is prorated), . What happens is the bonus for the current year is applied to that year's dead cap, and the rest of the bonus is applied to the next year, not the length of the original contract. So if you cut Lott right now, you'll eat $8 mil this year and $16 mil next year, and the following year he'll be completely off the books, if you wait until next year you'll eat $8 mil next year and the year after.

Unless the players are just not serviceable I'd recommend keeping the ones with bad contracts and just not renewing them, taking care to not get crazy in free agency until you get your contracts back under control with players that you like.

That's the way you want it.

The base salary is negotiable. The bonus is not. So you could have had this player at $8m/$8m, or $3m/$8m, for example.

This player was going to have an $8m bonus regardless (assuming he demanded a $48m bonus and was signed to a 6 year deal). The $48m bonus demand would not change regardless of how many years the contract was for, so might as well offer him 6 years (unless he is old).
