We (Jets) drafted a kicker (Mike Nugent) in the 2nd round in the 2005 draft, I nearly died when I saw the pick come in. YES a kicker like Vinatieri has been doing it regularly game after game, then you have someone like Hauschka who rose to the challenge and arguably was the Seahawks MVP often nailing 50 yarders.
The Nugent pick didn't work out and I think the pressure of the 2nd round tag on his neck heaped too much on him.
I really don't want to see a kicker go that high. However we did draft a punter in this years draft and by all accounts would have garnered ALOT of interest post draft, so this is what I would call a good pick , need + value.

Tampa Bay = New England farm team

The Patriots used to be a farm team for the Saints (Heath Evans, David Thomas, Randall Gay). Still got a couple recently (Michael Hoomanawanui and the dreadful Brandon Browner) but it's kinda gone both ways now (Akiem Hicks, Ramon Humber, Rob Ninkovich).

I would argue that Miami was more of a farm team for New England than Tampa.

I thought only Oakland did things like this.

They took Janikowski high, then followed up with a Punter high. Both turned out golden, but neither one or even the combination of both made them an amazing team.

Certain Positions just carry less weight. It was the Second Round, which has a fair Starter Rate coming out of it. Now obviously each Draft is different, but if they had landed a Starting ILB there, he'd make more impact over a Season than any Kicker in the League.

Which isn't to say Kickers aren't important... they are. But as mentioned, the difference between the BEST Kicker and the 16th Kicker in the NFL isn't the much.
