I'm not a coach but if I was looking to coach, I would contact my local youth league and ask what their requirements are. They would be the best ones to ask because it's the league you'll potentially join. I would imagine the requirements are not uniform in every state or community.

nfl.com participates in quite a lot of youth leagues, and offers an "official" certification - or used to not so log ago. Perhaps they still do.
Here's some stuff from de google:

Well punisher, I have been retired for years and don't know what has changed! I do know alot
of rule changes, good and bad, have taken place! It all differed to some degree, middle school
from high school, college from pro, rec leagues from pop warner! With so many youth leagues
poping up every where, parents do lots of coaching along with many volunteers! You may have
to sign some papers now days, I can't remember, it is great to work with young men and boys!
One of my favorite times is when I was asked to start a football program for a city rec department
for 4th,5th and 6th graders! I had the high school football team coach and call the games, the
kids learned fundementals, the young men learned coaching plus rules of the game!
