Power ranking calculations

Can someone tell me how the power ranking is calculated ?

It looks at each team and their opponents' schedule strength to determine their score. It only looks at the current season, so early in the season it's going to pretty much line up with how well each team is doing. As there is more overlap in the games, however, the algorithm will begin to resolve. It does not at this time take the team rosters into account, only the results of the games. Wins are capped at 14 points so blowing a team out doesn't get you overly inflated in the rankings.

Neither does being 12-0 and the only undefeated team. You can still be 4th, behind 2 and 3 loss teams.

Needs some work.

Are you implying that being 12-0 automatically makes you the best team? If so, I don't agree.

You're welcome to post your own power rankings - of course it is completely meaningless in terms of the game play, it's only one of many possible algorthms that could be used. (FWIW, I built the algorithm around studying the algorithms used by actual sports bookies when setting the initial line for a game, it's not something I created from scratch - if you're curious you can check out this book http://amzn.to/1QNLgQh to see the basis for how it was built, which was a very interesting book in general)

No. I definitely do not agree that the only undefeated team is automatically the best team, or should automatically be "ranked" #1. But, wins and losses should be a factor taken into consideration in "rankings".

The team I am referring to is in MFN-11. I don't think anyone would disagree that this team is one of the best in the league, every year. I think I have made the championship game every year (I may have missed one). I usually lead the league (or am close) in points scored, fewest points allowed, most yards per game, fewest yards per game allowed, etc. That is why it was strange to see them so low. It made me curious as to what goes into the rankings if items such as that, plus W/L, don't seem to count very much.

It's not a big deal to me either way. I was just curious.

Another curious example of the power rankings.

CUST-33

Prior to game 1, my team was 3rd and my opponent was 4th.
My team won the game, yet I dropped two spots to 5th while my opponent (who lost) rose to 3rd.

Obviously strength of schedule had nothing to do with this, since we have only played each other.

That was a good game in week 1, but yeah the team you just beat moving ahead of you does seem a bit silly.

I just had a team that was 8-8 (missed the playoffs) move ahead of my team which was 11-5 (also missing the playoffs). It's divisional round so I have no idea how this could have happened since obviously neither of us have played a game since the end of the season.

I think it probably also takes into consideration the results of your opponents' games throughout the season, e.g., comparing scores. However, I wonder whether it takes into consideration statistics other than final scores, e.g., yards gained/allowed from scrimmage.

For example, let's say that you sneaked by a relatively weak opponent during a given week and then was slammed by a good opponent that you previously previously has barely beaten. Let's also say that the opponent that you split the two games with slammed the same relatively weak opponent (that you barely beat). Even though both teams have a 2-1 record, it is likely the opponent that had won two easy games and barely lost one, would be rated higher than the team that is also 2-1 but had been slammed in its loss and barely won its other two games. In my mind, the question is how do you define "slam". Based on score only? Or add some other factor(s)?
