Pass Offense

So I'm fairly new to this so forgive my newbieness with this.

I have a quarterback who is 88/88. My top two receivers are 84/92 and 81/99. My offensive line is mediocre. Yet 12 games into the season, I've thrown 10 TDs and 12 INT. My top two receivers have combined for 750 yards (one of which is only 130 yards). What am I doing wrong that I can't move the ball through the air?

Cust-33/Brooklyn

Well your WRs are very young so they are still developing, your completion percentage is decent and your yards per attempt are decent but not great. Your interception rate actually is only a touch high but that tends to happen in this game and sometimes there is not much you can really do about it. You will need to comb through your plays to see which ones are working and which ones are not working for you, I would also seriously look at what you are doing on 3rd down. From the looks of some of your game logs your team has been pretty poor offensively and defensively on 3rd down. If you can't stay on the field or get off the field on defense then you really do not have much of a chance. Sacks also seem to be a bit of an issue but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot you can do about that except adjust what plays you are running and even then QBs will tend to hold onto the ball or go all deer in the headlights from time to time.

Okay, never thought about doing that. I'm going to go through my plays, see which ones have a good average yards per play and take out some that aren't doing so well. As for third down, are you suggesting I alter my run/pass balance on the game plan screen?

Keep in mind those averages can be skewed by one or two big plays and that they include the current season and the previous season so they don't always accurately reflect how your team is performing that season with that play. As for 3rd down you may have to look at the game film and see what is working and what is not working based on the situation.

Yeah, I'm only taking account into the ones that have a big sample size (such as 50 attempts) to really say it's working or not. If it only averaged 2 yards on 3 attempts, I think it's worth trying again and seeing if it is a trend or just how things fell into place those times. I'm also going to look at some of my games again and take note of what you said to look for.

I like lellows assessment. I would like to add that it seems your team is playing from behind alot. Perhaps the defenses are keying the pass.

The high sacks and ints and the fact that it looks easy to run up the middle on you. Your D is ranked 26th in ypc. And not to good against the pass. Give the Offense a chance with some defense.

I would look at opponents too. You have one tough game left on your schedule but your QB could "pad" his stats these last few games.

And look at your run/pass mix generally. You're 28th in the league in pass attempts per game and 9th in rushes per game. If you want to be a pass-first team with gaudy QB stats you need to change up your gameplan to reflect that. Right now you're closer to the Seahawks with Lynch than you are New England with Brady.

Interestingly, I played you last in Cust-33 and had you pegged as a run first team for the reasons above. That was good for me as I'm far stronger defending the run than the pass.

As others have suggested, take a look at your plays and perhaps create an offensive rule or two so that those plays are utilised a lot more frequently than others.

Also, make sure you tinker with your game plan so that you're not only focussing on the pass, but on passing formations as well.

It may take a while to get your players used to some new plays, but will be worth it in the long run once you've settled on plays and a playbook you like.

I'm considering going with a more pass oriented coach now that the season is over. Will that help matters?

Coaches will effect how quickly your players progress and head coaches determine what plays are in your offensive and defensive playbook.
