I am commissioner of the USFL/WFL user-created league. I just took over the Washington Federals. They are in a real pickle.

$89,000 under the current salary cap.
22 players whose contracts are expiring.

I have looked at renegotiating current contracts, etc. Frankly, I am out of solutions. I know that watching 22 players walk away will put this team behind the eight-ball for many seasons. So, I am asking for help if anyone has any ideas of how to deal with this situation.

try signing them on the last sim of the season (the end of season sim). u can go over the cap for this season as long as you stay under next season's cap (unless this was changed). Hopefully someone else can confirm if this strategy still works.....

I just tried that in a league...had 4 players I wanted to resign. I increased their asking bonus by roughly $50,000 and 0-4 signed. I know JDB was going to fix this so you couldn't sign anyone the last day. I may have missed a post in which he said he did this.

One thing I try and do is resign a player from his initial contract, usually in his 2nd or 3rd season. This usually will give you a savings, however, since the season is over...no more salary to be paid for the current year...this may be tough to impossible with no cap.

I have been in this situation before, tribewriter, and I did let the players go and signed a bunch (for the minimum) the following season. Since the team I took over was awful, I did get quite a few players off waivers the following season and it didn't take too long for them to be competitive. A lot of work, but I've seen some of your rosters in other leagues and I'm sure you will come out pretty good very soon.

Thanks for the kind words. I think the noob coach may want his team back before all this can be resolved next season. We'll see.

There is very little dead cap next season, so cut all the veterans that aren't obvious starters. That will clear you enough cap to sign the younger players (hopefully).

Looking at your roster ordered by future potential, I would cut all the ones with 1 year remaining from FS Norwood down and use the cap generated to resign all the ones with 1 year remaining up from FS Norwood

Because the season is almost over, cutting guys won't help the cap problems THIS season. I know what to do NEXT season, but I am trying to avoid having 22 players enter free agency when the season flips.

I just checked a couple of the leagues im in and the other teams in my league were able to do that so maybe it still works? But maybe if it forces you to go over the cap for the current year it doesnt I'm not sure....

That's a good point! I do believe I've had a couple leagues sign players on the last day (recently) and the ones that have signed, I did have cap left. The ones in which I didn't have the cap, didn't sign.

I wish JDB could chime in and confirm if this is indeed how it works :)
