OL Evaluation

I was wondering if i could get a little help in evaluation of my OL players.

So far i look at strength and the two blocking skills. For a C also short snapping and intelligence.

But how do you value speed and acceleration in an OL player? Is it need or nice? And do you differentiate between the T and G postions according to the players speed and acceleration?

You want acceleration and speed at the tackle positions and for designed runs with 'pull' in it make sure the lineman has the two aforementioned traits.

Look at the triangle first as the be all, end all (strength/pass block and run block) and then branch out to speed and acceleration. Push those linemen whom are close with other linemen but not as proficient in acc and speed ....close calls = put the more speed based linemen into the higher positions.

Thanks for the reply!

Are you valuing acceleration higher than speed or vice versa? Or is it a combination of the two?

I would expect speed to be more important when pulling?

Combo, however, you want excellent acceleration for the initial burst.

I don't break down game film on that level. I go off feel.

The goal is to attempt to make the play as successful as possible. To achieve that goal on a pull block scenario you want your lineman to zip out there (i.e. acceleration and then speed to maintain)

...and you're welcome :) My attention was on not screwing up a game vs. AI before....

I too, firmly believe in the "triangle" of "the big three" attributes for each position.
Cool to see a similar thought pattern, smirt :)
fwiw, i place acc as more valuable than spd in the lines, and a 60+ rating in each with that triangle you mentioned is meaty, beaty, big, and bouncy! +70 acc for the pull!

subtext: there are primary, secondary, and tertiary attributes, and they should be weighted as such.

Is it better to have an OL with 90 strength and 50 pass/run block, or 70 strength and 70 pass/run block? Or 50 strength and 90 pass/run block?

I still get caught thinking that a high block rating means a player is good at blocking, but I know that's not the case. It would make things much less confusing if JDB would just change the names for these attributes.

It's dependent upon the play.

Strength = push back ability at the line. Backing d-liners off and away from your backfield.

Blocking = how long the player holds the block.

Basically, avoid mediocrity. 90 strength guy with like 70+ block or 70+ strength guy with 95+ block to where how you want to use him. 70/70/70 in and around there = why bother if the ratings all fall in a 'sleep zone.'

I wouldn't f*** with a 50 strength guy under any capacity unless I took over an AI team and now I have to place the player somewhere deep on the bench.

So, is strength more important than the blocking skills?
