My guess is that the kick only went 9 yards and 35.9 inches.

I think if there is an onside kick bug, it is that the kicking team recovers too often. I have had several games where the kicking team has recovered more than one onside kick in the 4th quarter.

I think it has something to do with how quickly the kicking team is getting down-field whilst the receiving team seem to move a whole lot slower, that and the kick height is also quite high giving the kicking team more opportunity.

I think JDB has said in previous posts that the recovery rate for onsides kicks in MFN is very close (maybe lower) than it is in the NFL.

Maybe that is true overall, but some specific teams seem to get them all.

Your kicker's accuracy comes into play on an onside kick. WarEagle is correct, though, that the success rate is is keeping with the NFL average. It happens infrequently enough that there's not really enough of a sample size even in a long term league to get good numbers (my success rate response was after simming several seasons in a test environment where every kickoff was an onside kick - a piece of code that would have caused quite a conversation if it had made it into the production version!)

Since 2009, there have only been 3 teams that have recovered more than 2 onside kicks in a season. All 3 teams recovered 3 in a season. I have had at least 2 games where a team recovered 2 against me in a single game.

The onside kick success rate stats from 2000-2015 was 16%, which actually is lower than it was when I looked previously. MFN's success rate is actually about 18% (the number I saw previously was 19% so in the last few years that average has gone down, which is interesting)

Looking at the link you provided, it's very interesting to see how the success rate varies by kickers. Some kickers are obviously much better at the onside kick than others. Better than I would have imagined.

Jeff Wilkins has successfully converted 40% of his attempts, and with 25 attempts, that's enough of a sample size to be taken seriously.

I know I have watched games live where a team has converted 2 in the same game. It's rare, but it happens.

I wonder what is more rare, a successful onside kick, or a QB throwing 7 interceptions in one game?
